Bruce Godfrey

Bruce is an experienced CEO with a demonstrated record in leadership, strategy development and implementation, capital raising and team building — particularly in early-stage companies. He is recognised by peers as an analytical, commercially-astute executive with a proven ability to manage technologists and their technology from embryonic stage to commercial readiness.

Bruce has extensive experience in undertaking discussions and negotiations for equity raisings in international capital markets, and in the issues of commercialising new technology. He has a solid track-record in delivering against financial and project targets, focusing businesses on the critical issues and delivering people and processes to capitalise on opportunities. His own technical background covers the broad field of solid-state materials and their application to new technologies and products to realise market opportunities.

From 1997 to 2003, he was Managing Director of Ceramic Fuel Cells Limited, a technology and product development company established in Melbourne in 1992 that is a world leader in solid oxide fuel cells following 10 years of intensive research and development. Key aspects of the position included building the executive management team, identification and introduction of potential investors, and creating a brand-name and market presence on a world scale. Major achievements included:

  • Raising $70 million in capital from strategic and financial investors plus a further $15 million from a Federal Government R&D Start Grant;

  • Undertaking discussions with potential, international strategic alliance partners as a result of building a credible profile of the technology together with the abilities of the company and the executive management team; and

  • Leading the decision to re-align corporate activities to focus on critical value adding milestones and downsizing the company by 45% to conserve cash at a crucial time.

Prior to this, he was Managing Director of the Energy Research and Development Corporation, which managed the Australian Government’s direct investment in innovation and research into energy supply and use. Key aspects of the position included industry and government liaison, development of linkages between the public and private sectors, provision of technical expertise in a wide range of areas, and managing and growing the Corporation nationally and internationally. Major achievements included:

  • Successfully implementing a seed capital investment model to maximise industry participation and co-investment in innovation (the fundamentals of this model have been replicated in other Federal and State funding initiatives);

  • Leading a team that invested over $60 million in innovation projects worth around $500 million and with an industry to government investment ratio of 5:1 in its fifth year of operation, resulting in a number of new commercial products subsequently being taken to market; and

  • Building a brand profile that has endured well beyond the physical life of the Corporation.

Other positions have provided a range of technology development, marketing, transfer and commercialisation experience, including the successful transfer from a USA company to Australia of a new solar cell manufacturing technology and the establishment of Australia’s first commercial solar cell manufacturing facility in Sydney in the early 1980s.

Irene Wyld

Irene is an experienced senior executive with a proven record in strategic planning, corporate development, marketing and communications, business development and investment management across diverse and constantly changing market and industry segments.

Commercially astute, Irene’s achievements demonstrate an innate ability to identify opportunities and then strategically position companies to market them (either product or service related) within the public and private sector — both nationally and internationally. She is respected by industry peers and clients for her ability to develop and sustain relationships with multiple stakeholders who often have different agendas. She is able to build value propositions that facilitate shared outcomes, while delivering value to meet the identified needs of individuals.

During 2000 and 2001, Irene was Business Development Manager at Utili-Mode (a subsidiary of United Energy Limited). Until its sale to Australian Gas Light in 2002, United Energy provided end-to-end customer services through its wholly owned subsidiary — Utili-Mode — which provided call centre, metering, billing and revenue collection services, customer care and telemarketing to 1.2 million customers in both utility and non-utility market segments. As a direct report to the General Manager of Utili-Mode, she was responsible for the provision of strategic direction and advice focused on achieving the revenue growth objectives of the company, raising brand awareness, and development and management of the Sales and Account Management team. Major achievements included:

  • Leading Utili-Mode’s team in several multi-million dollar bids/tenders by its parent company — including the successful bid for Alinta Gas (WA);

  • Developing, negotiating and finalising a strategic Alliance with a multinational infrastructure provider (NEC Australia) facilitating Utili-Mode's rapid deployment capabilities in new market sectors; and

  • Building a strong Sales and Account Management team focused on retention and growth of existing client base and delivery of new revenue targets.

Prior to this, she was Manager, Business Development & Marketing for Richard Oliver International. A member of the global Willis Group, Richard Oliver International provides the full spectrum of risk management consulting across all industry sectors. As a direct report to the Managing Director, Irene was responsible for all business development activities, development of marketing material to raise company profile, and the establishment and implementation of campaign strategies. Major achievements included:

  • Developing and implementing nationally, sales management tools to identify and prioritise new opportunities, monitor deal flow from prospects through to proposals and business wins and measure company achievement against budget, thereby moving the business from a ratio of 1 in 5 to 4 in 5 wins to proposals submitted; and

  • Facilitating workshops and delivering strategic risk management consulting to a diverse client base (e.g. Freehill Hollingdale & Page, Serco Asia Pacific, LaTrobe University, MLC).

Other positions, particularly her time as an Investment Manager at the Energy Research and Development Corporation in Canberra form 1991 to 1997, have provided a range of technology investment management, market assessment and planning, and networking and liaison experience across the business, financial, government and research sectors.
